About the Program

Some describe Traego’s live shows as a cathartic, emotionally charged party—a space where chaos meets comfort. Their walls of frenzied guitar, fast-paced rhythms, and explosive stage presence are all about releasing energy and giving it back to the crowd. From rage to resilience, from despair to self-deprecation, their music reflects the spirit embedded in their name—traego, or “pitiful filth.”

Even if life doesn't go our way, even if we are the so-called dirt of society, we still show up and play our part.

Traego’s performances transcend linguistic boundaries. Singing in their mother tongue—Hakka—they scream out against injustice, inequality, and the absurdity of the world, transforming frustration into fuel, and marginalisation into raw power.

Traego

Traego(粹垢)is homophonic to the Hakka phrase coiˊgo (衰過), which means “pitiful.”

To extend the meanings of the two Chinese characters combined can also be interpreted as “pure filth,” representing our cynical punk rock spirit and reflecting the world’s prevarication using our most sincere words.

TAIWANfest Toronto is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, that is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
