De De the Digger
Curiosity killed the cat?
Curious about history, De De, the mascot of the TAIWANfest team, will accompany you to explore the past and present lives of Taiwan place names.
All poses are modeled by De De herself.
No cats were harmed in the making of these designs.

出於對歷史的好奇，台灣文化節團隊的心頭肉 De De 將陪伴大家挖掘台灣地名的前世今生。
注意： De De 真有其貓，且本計畫沒有任何貓咪受傷。
Keelung
基隆
Keelung was formerly known as “Kelong”, with the Chinese characters for “chicken coop”. It was named by travelling Hokkien merchants. However, it did not refer to the current Keelung, but rather Heping Island, on which the Spanish built a fortress.
The Spanish called it “Kelang”; the Dutch called it “Quelang.” This is because they met Hokkien people with different accents!
基隆舊稱雞籠，是航海的閩南商人所取，但其實當時並不是指現在的基隆，而是西班牙人在上頭興建了堡壘的和平島。西班牙人稱Kelang; 荷蘭人稱 Quelang，其實是因為他們遇到不同口音的閩南人。
Cape Santiago
三貂角
Cape Santiago stands on the easternmost point of Taiwan. It is a very historic place, and now a tourist attraction. In the 1600s, the Spanish reached northern Taiwan and gave the area this name.
試試看用台語念念看三貂角。你發現了嗎？這是西班牙文「聖地牙哥 Santiago」啊！西班牙船隻航行北台灣時發現了這處岬角，聖地牙哥是他們常見的取名。
Fugui Cape
富貴角
The origins of Fugui Cape came from the Dutch word “Heok”, which means cape. Due to the Hokkien pronunciation, it is now known as “Fugui” Cape today.
「富貴角」源自荷蘭文 Heok，指的是岬角。爾後，閩南人將其轉換成音近的「富貴」，流傳至今。
Monga
艋舺
Wanhua was formerly known as “Monga.” Ancient Dutch maps marked it as a trading place that both Han Chinese and Indigenous people used. “Monga” comes from the Plains Indigenous people’s name for small boats: Bangka. If you look carefully, the characters for “Monga” both have boats in them!
萬華舊稱艋舺，荷蘭的古地圖裡將當時鄰近河邊的它標示為交易場所，漢人與原住民都在此貿易。「艋舺」源自平埔族稱小船為 Bangka，所以仔細觀察，艋、舺兩字都有艘船在裡面呢！
Yehliu
野柳
When the Spaniards sailed between Keelung and Tamsui, they often ran aground when passing this cape. They called it Punto Diablos. Diablos lost its consonants through oral tradition and became today’s Yehliu (iá-liú).
當年西班牙人航行基隆和淡水之間，常常在經過這個岬角時觸礁，將其稱作魔鬼角 Punto Diablos，甚至一路演變至今日的地名。魔鬼 Diablos 在口傳中失去子音，最後成為「野柳 iá-liú」。
Su'ao
蘇澳
There is a theory that the name Su’ao was developed from San Lorenzo, which was named by the Spaniards. “Su”, derived from the last part of “Lorenzo” was combined with “Ao”, which means harbour.
蘇澳的名字有一說法是，從西班牙人命名此地的聖路連蘇 San Lorenzo 發展而來，取尾字蘇再加上意指港灣的「澳」字，成為今日的地名蘇澳。

Taiwan Tongue
The tongue is a storybook that we all carry., And what’s more, the history of a country is what lingers on the tongues of the people.
The autocratic policy of banning dialects has assigned languages a superior or inferior class. In this era where Mandarin was enforced to be the standard, a “Taiwanese tone” began to emerge, a Mandarin spoken with the Taiwanese twang, a generation of accented Mandarin that their children would laugh at. This series is meant to show everyone the cute accent of this “Taiwanese tone” and remind us of the history it has witnessed.
舌頭是每個人隨身攜帶的故事書，更甚者，一個國家的歷史就濃縮在人民的舌頭上。
獨裁的禁說方言政策讓語言有了優劣位階，被迫改變的台灣人開始說著有腔調的「不標準國語」，成了讓子女晚輩訕笑的「台灣國語」。這個系列要讓大家看見「台灣國語」的趣味可愛，也提醒著我們它所見證的歷史。

Taiwan Diary
Unremarkable everyday scenes turn out to be unique aspects of the island. Fruit is not just something to fill your belly, but also something peppered into the spoken tongue of the Taiwanese people. If you don’t eat enough, you can’t understand the fruit language!
台灣是世界知名的「水果王國」，選擇百百種，樣樣多汁甜美。水果不僅吃進肚裡，也會從台灣人的嘴裡吐出來，吃不夠多你還聽不懂水果語呢！
