About the Program

If you had been born on the other side of history, would the heroes carved into monuments and celebrated in history books still be heroes to you?

Looking at the histories of Scotland, Canada, and Taiwan, whenever different cultures intersected, the dominant group almost always decided whose beliefs, systems, and way of life were worth keeping, and whose had to be sacrificed or rewritten. In mainstream stories, these actions were always tied to ideas like 'modernization' and 'progress.' But we have to ask: who was this progress actually for? And in the rapid rush of history, what did we leave behind?

Rethinking history isn't about denying the past—it's about creating a more equal dialogue. Only by facing forgotten memories head-on can we help those who were silenced reclaim their voices to tell their own history.

TAIWANfest Toronto is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, that is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
