About the Program

Indigo dyeing is not only a symbol of craftsmanship but also a vital thread in the cultural heritage of Asian communities. This exhibition explores how the art of indigo dyeing expresses identity and cultural adaptation—particularly how Chinese-speaking communities integrate tradition and modernity to build a future of multicultural coexistence in new environments.

Canada is often described as a vibrant tapestry woven from people of all backgrounds. Similarly, the fusion of nature and culture in indigo works reflects the resilience and creativity of migrant communities.

At the heart of this project is the recognition that Taiwan, too, is an island shaped over centuries by waves of migration from across Asia. The craft of indigo dyeing has taken root and flourished here, evolving into a distinctive local tradition. Our team has long sought to reconnect the broken threads of Taiwan’s indigo history—not only preserving and passing down traditional techniques but also innovating them to meet contemporary needs.

Through art and craftsmanship, we aim to highlight how Asian communities transcend cultural boundaries to build a more inclusive and sustainable future. This effort both deepens the legacy of Taiwan’s indigo culture and shares its spirit with the world—an active practice of multicultural coexistence.

Watersource Cultural and Educational Foundation

In 2013, the Watersource Cultural and Educational Foundation (WCEF) established Taiping Blue in Taiping, Taichung's Toubiankeng area. Most of the local residents are Indigenous and Hakka. Dedicated to preserving and innovating the indigo dyeing tradition, the initiative promotes local industry and supports sustainable community development.

WCEF’s primary objective is to infuse creativity into traditional crafts, thereby fostering their growth and imbuing the resulting dyeing and weaving products with a contemporary flair and rich cultural significance. Furthermore, "Taiping Blue" is committed to advancing public welfare by creating a conducive working environment and offering technical training programs tailored to benefit local youth, middle-aged women, and underprivileged populations. Through these efforts, the initiative not only seeks to safeguard the invaluable indigo-dye craft culture but also aspires to stimulate the local economy by promoting a more eco-sustainable community.

TAIWANfest Toronto is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, that is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
