RapShark and Jacq Teh first met at 2024 Jade Music Fest in Asia during a meet-and-greet event. They immediately discovered shared interests in musical genres and artists, especially Teresa Teng, and quickly became friends. Despite living 12,330 kilometres apart, separated by an ocean, growing up on different continents, RapShark and Jacq Teh are united in their language of Hokkien/Taigi and their shared love of Chinese pop music, especially hip-hop, jazz and R&B. In the words of the Chinese legend, both artists share the same moon and the same song.
This musical performance will feature a mix of adaptations of the duo's favourite songs, as well as a new single that they worked together online for a year, paying tribute to the women role models in their lives: Teresa Teng, their grandmothers, and many more.
RapShark and Jacq Teh will be accompanied by Allison Au on Alto Saxophone, and Micah Weekes on keyboard.
RapShark is a singer-songwriter based in Tainan, Taiwan. She writes songs in different genres with a hip-hop attitude, including reggae, post rock, alternative R&B, and indie rock. She “uses hip-hop’s attitude to create the music she wants to do”.
As a native speaker of Mandarin and Taiwanese, she is good at stringing incisive lyrics with rhymes and melodies, giving full play to the unique musicality of Chinese and Taiwanese tones. She brings new flavour to the Old School Beat, poetry to the rhythm, her lyrics sometimes funny and sometimes bloody—as a RapShark does.
Vocalist, producer, and songwriter Jacqueline Teh is widely recognized for her captivating vocal arrangements and limitless songwriting. Her voice, described by CBC Music as “a summer breeze - warm and inviting”, can be heard on her solo debut album “Waves” as well as her sophomore EP, “Crush”, which blends English lyrics with Mandarin and Hokkien, her mother tongue. Jacqueline is also featured on Robert Lee’s latest modern jazz album “Forbidden West” and jazz/R&B band Moodset’s debut album “Let's Talk”. Her songwriting can be found on Sammy Jackson’s Juno Award-winning album “With You” and latest album “In the Meantime”. Jacqueline has performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, Jade Music Fest in Taiwan and Vancouver, the Markham Jazz Festival, and Jazz FM’s Live-to-Air Series. Along with her songwriting endeavours, Jacqueline cares deeply about music education. She is on faculty at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Music, where she teaches jazz voice. In addition, Jacqueline is the executive director and choral conductor for St. James Town Community Arts, a non-profit organization providing free arts education to children in Toronto.
