About the Program

When the flowers bloom is a documentary by Taiwanese director Qiu Mingyuan, focusing on Taiwanese land, tung trees, and Hakka culture. The 98-year-old protagonist, Guo Huoyan, shows his resilience in protecting the forests, demonstrating the wisdom of coexisting with nature. His daily labour, family responsibilities, and insistence on independence reflect the Hakka people's deep affection for the land and their approach to life.

Qiu Mingyuan emphasizes that the core value of the documentary lies in providing different perspectives, provoking reflection and action. The film highlights cultural landscapes as influenced by policy. TAIWANfest Toronto is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of many nations, including the Mississaugas of the Credit, the Anishnabeg, the Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee and the Wendat peoples, that is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge our privilege to be gathered here, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples of this land while we engage in meaningful conversations of culture and reconciliation.
